We’re living through a genuine turning point in global history, and I find myself right in the middle of it. The world is shifting rapidly – China is already the second-largest economy on the planet and could well become the largest within the next decade. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom continues to wield remarkable soft power across the globe, from fashion and finance to literature and education. Walk through any top British university today and you’ll hear Mandarin in the corridors; thousands of Chinese students like me have come here, drawn by the UK’s academic reputation and global influence.
I’m Jack, a 17-year old Chinese national, and I’ve been living and studying in the UK since I was 10. I’m currently in the sixth form at one of England’s leading public schools.
I’m proud of my Chinese heritage – its rich history, philosophical depth, and cultural complexity. I have lived in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. I love the Chinese languages and continue to explore Chinese culture with a sense of reverence and curiosity. But I am also fascinated by Western thought and culture. My main education has been in English, and I’ve grown up grown up navigating both worlds – not always smoothly, but with growing confidence and a real desire to build understanding where others see division.
I’m studying A-levels in mathematics, economics, politics, and physics — subjects that get to the heart of how I see the world. The word “enthusiasm” comes from the Greek for “possessed by a god,” and while Physics occasionally tests that theory, I genuinely come alive when wrestling with ideas that shape how societies think, trade, govern, and evolve.
This blog is my contribution to what I believe is one of the most important conversations of our time. I want to explore UK–China relations through economics, politics, history, and culture. Here’s something I’ve observed: China often understands the West better than the West understands China. That asymmetry creates real friction – political, economic, and cultural. My goal is to work in international relations one day, helping bridge that gap. But for now, this is my space for dialogue, questions, and genuine exploration.
With global politics becoming increasingly volatile, AI transforming human life at an extraordinary pace, and misinformation clouding important debates, the need for mutual understanding has never been more urgent. Through posts, articles, and shared insights, I hope this blog can offer a thoughtful platform for anyone interested in the evolving relationship between two of the world’s most influential powers.
